Hello LJE Neighbors,

On behalf of ENP, a couple of us attended a Community Safety Meeting sponsored by Districts 11 and District 13 (our district with Councilmember Gay Donnell Willis) to discuss crime in North Dallas with Police Chief Eddie Garcia. Since
it was open to the entire community, I thought I’d share some notes with the entire neighborhood, not just ENP members.

Attached are printouts of the Dallas Police Dashboard info. An interactive Dashboard page can be found here. These are the figures the city government gets and tracks daily:

https://dallaspolice.net/resources/Pages/Crime-reports.aspx

Just a few highlights of the meeting:

1. Crime in Dallas is down 2.6% compared to last year and violent crime is down 7.29 percent.

2. Property crime is still a problem. The most common property crime is car break-ins that we can reduce by hiding our things, locking our cars and taking our keys.

3. The police are dealing with violent crime by “Hot Spot Policing” via a grid system that’s reassessed every 60 days to see where a police presence is most needed. Right now they’re working with 64 grids throughout the city. In our council
district, major crimes occur in Vickery Meadows and they are in a special program to reduce crime and strengthen their community.

4. How we can help support the police: 1) Be patient, 2) When you see them, thank them, 3) Get to know your neighborhood police officer (NPO)

5. We are part of the Northwest Division: https://dallaspolice.net/division/northwest/northwest that runs from Inwood west to beyond Luna and LBJ Fwy south to the
Market Center area. Chief Garcia says the divisions have remained the same for over 20 years, but the city has changed and he intends on re-districting. It’s much needed. Currently, we are in Sector 520 and that runs from Inwood to Marsh, LBJ to south of Lovers.
The pink area on the map.

6. Chief Garcia really supports his officers. He meets with the unions regularly. He works on increasing morale and one way that’s working is a 10/4 work week so they’re trying that out. You can follow Chief Garcia on Twitter, too. He’s
really impressive. Lots of energy and he really does want results.

7. Recruitment isn’t a problem but they can only assimilate 225 new recruits a year as far as facilities go. The problem is that officers are retiring or quitting at the same numbers or more as are being recruited. That’s happening all
over the US, not just here.

Take a look at the links—lots of information there. Follow Chief Garcia on Twitter. Stop and say “hello” or give a wave to our neighborhood ENP officers when you see them out and about—they appreciate that and have said that our neighborhood
is one of the friendliest in that way. If we hear about a meeting enough ahead of time, we’ll let you know in case you want to attend, they really are informative but this one was last minute.

I’ll also be sending out an email soon to recruit LJE ENP leadership. It makes our community all the better and we really do need your participation. And, as always, thanks to those who signed up for another year and welcome to our new
members!

Sincerely,
