Sounds like carpenter ants. We have had them periodically over the years.
The shavings are what they discard when they are making their nest in your
walls. They usually enter your wall from outside through a hole in the
mortar.
We have an exterminator that we call if we have a problem. (We don't do
regular quarterly treatment because I don't like to kill the good insects.)
They will spot treat the area for about $40.00 by spraying insecticide into
the hole where the ants are getting in. then they will tell you to seal up
the hole if you want to prevent a recurrence.
I use a small family owned business called Action Exterminators,
214-388-9874, but I'm sure your exterminator can treat the area as well.
It's a pretty easy fix.
Good luck!
