May 2024
Hello Neighbors,
First, I hope you are all safe and that you did not sustain damage in this morning’s wind and thunderstorms. At last report, Oncor reported 231,461 customers without electricity. Their teams are out assessing damage to equipment and are making repairs. There is information on how to report a power outage below.
I was driving the district this morning and saw lots of downed branches, street and construction signs blown over. Call 311 to report any traffic signal issues, as I did when I saw the signal was totally out at Walnut Hill and Marsh. In this instance, treat the intersection as a four-way stop. And, please practice radical courtesy on the streets over the next couple of days as the City, Oncor and others work on repairs and restoration of service. Our first responders need to focus on the aftermath of this storm, not new problems created by running through intersections with flashing lights.
On my morning drive around, there were also trash bins and other yard items strewn about. Please take care when venturing out to put your items back in place. If you’re able, take a page from the Park Forest neighborhood playbook, meet up and set out to assist neighbors with clean up.
Branches and tree limbs will be picked up as part of the usual bulk trash schedule, however if you have a large volume please report it to 311—I’m hoping that they may be able to do some interim pick up if an area has a large volume of limbs.
Scroll down for more details on how to report issues related to the storm.
Be careful and stay safe,
P.S. The polls are still open today, so please vote if you haven’t already. The power was out at my usual voting spot, so I was sent to the next closest location. Check this site to see if your voting location is open: https://experience.arcgis.com/experience/71f662a8bd7f40a08d4342393dd11195/
If you have trouble walking up to the polls, there should be a sign with a phone number that you can call to request to have a poll worker bring your ballot to you. The number will be different at each location, but here’s the sign to look for:
Early Bulk Trash Set Out Enforcement Suspended
The Dallas Sanitation Department announced that early set-out enforcement has been suspended, and all residents will receive a 20-cubic yard exception for the next 15 days. Anything that exceeds the 20-cubic yard limit may result in an administrative fee.
Dallas Sanitation announced that trash pickup will be delayed one day this week (Monday pickup will now be picked up on Tuesday, and so on). Sanitation will also pick up brush and bulk items, up to 10 cubic yards, one day per month. Residents may also apply for a once-a-year 20 cubic yard exception when major events like bad weather create abnormal amounts of debris. Pickup requests must be requested the week prior to the desired pickup date. Please submit an SR for Storm Brush/Debris-SAN, which will help the Department of Sanitation gather data about where the need is greatest.
Dallas Department of Sanitation has provided the following temporary guidance to residents for trash removal:
Sanitation Services advises residents to move vegetative storm debris to the curb.
Early set-out enforcement has been suspended, but other rules still apply, including the 10-cubic yard limit or 20-cubic yard annual exception.
They ask that vegetative waste is separated from other material, such as building materials.
Collection is being delayed by one day due to unsafe roadway and alleyway conditions.
Sanitation is sending these messages out through service alerts, social media, and the Sanitation Services website.
Brush and bulk trash may be set out as early as 7:00 a.m. on the Thursday prior to your collection week (please see instructions below to find your Collection Week). Material must be placed at the curb by 7:00 a.m. the Monday of the collection week.
Brush and bulk trash must be placed just behind the curb line in front of your home.
Do not place in the street, on the sidewalk, or in any manner that will interfere with vehicular or pedestrian traffic or with solid waste collection service
Do not place within 5 feet of a roll cart, mailbox, fence or wall, water meter, telephone connection box, parked cars, fire hydrant, utility pole, or traffic sign
Do not place under low hanging tree limbs or power lines, in an alley, or in front of a vacant lot or business
When do I set out brush and bulk trash?
Brush and bulk trash may be set out as early as 7:00 a.m. on the Thursday prior to your collection week. Material must be placed at the curb by 7:00 a.m. the Monday of the collection week.
Sanitation customers with storm-related debris may also:
Self-haul waste to the landfill or a transfer station at no cost
Utilize debris removal services of a private company
